Viable Non-monotonic Applications
نویسنده
چکیده
Non-monotonicity enhances the expressivity of a representation framework allowing high-level representations of (inherently non-monotonic) problems close to their natural specification. This gain in expressivity should not though compromise (severely) the computational effectiveness of the solutions based on non-monotonic representations. In this paper we argue that for abduction and consequently also for other non-monotonic frameworks to become viable for "real-life" applications it is important for these to be integrated with appropriate specialized constraint solvers for (low-level) domain constraints. It is thus important to define and implement efficiently appropriate interfaces between non-monotonic reasoning systems and suitable constraint solvers. We describe briefly an example of such an interface and discuss how it helps to develop viable applications. Such successful integrations will have the advantages of modularity and flexibility that the high-level non-monotonic representation offers together with computationally effective solutions to complex problems.

On the Non-monotonic Behaviour of Event Calculus for Deriving Maximal Time Intervals
The Event Calculus was proposed by Kowalski and Sergot as a simple and effective tool for dealing with time and actions in the framework of logic programming [9]. In response to the occurrences of events, the formalism computes maximal and convex intervals of validity of the relationships holding in the modeled world. The case of interest is when the set of events is fixed, but the order of the...

متن کاملACLP: Flexible Solutions to Complex Problems
In this paper we present a new system for non-monotonic reasoning performed using abduction. The system, called ACLP, is a programming language based on the framework of Abductive and Constraint Logic Programming (ACLP) which integrates abduction and constraint solving in Logic Programming. It is build on top of the ECLiPSe language for Constraint Logic Programming (CLP) interfacing (and exploi...
متن کاملOn Some Covariance Inequalities for Monotonic and Non-monotonic Functions
Chebyshev’s integral inequality, also known as the covariance inequality, is an important problem in economics, finance, and decision making. In this paper we derive some covariance inequalities for monotonic and non-monotonic functions. The results developed in our paper could be useful in many applications in economics, finance, and decision making.
متن کاملMonotonic properties for the viable control of discrete time systems
This paper deals with the control of nonlinear systems in the presence of state and control constraints for discrete time dynamics in finite dimensional spaces. The viability kernel is known to play a basic role for the analysis of such problems and the design of viable control feedbacks. Unfortunately, this kernel may display very non regular geometry and its computation is not an easy task in...
